Today is the day. We have to give Momma fluids. This doesn’t mean just giving her lots to drink. The blood tests showed she is at 15% kidney function. If she were a person she would be on daily dialysis to keep the poisons out of her blood. Because her kidneys aren’t working properly they aren’t able to keep the bad stuff out of her blood. This is what is making her feel bad and vomit blood.
Since she can’t have dialysis, we have to flush her kidneys out. This is done by inserting a needle subcutaneously (under the skin) and giving her a good amount of lactated ringers (think of getting an IV at the hospital). We are giving her 200cc’s to start off with. I set up a little bed in the bathroom with the IV bag hanging from the shower rod. Scottie sat on the floor with Mia and I thought this would be a comfy set up for her.

Momma is not having any of this needle and fluid stuff! I attempted to stick her twice but she yelled and jumped so badly I picked her up and told her we’d have to do something else. Maybe I’m not doing it correctly. Maybe this needle is just too damn big! I had told myself I was not going to put her through this when the time came. I knew it was going to come down to this. I wish I’d known Mia was going to be my dog

When Reb Wheeler carried Mia off the airplane she looked so confused and scared. What an experience for this dog who’d never been anywhere before except in a living hell. We drove Mia to her new home to live with Alice. Alice was thrilled to meet all of us and thought Mia was precious. We even have Alice on video (a documentary was being shot on our rescue efforts and Mia was part) saying how this was a precious little life, she’s been through hell and she intends to give her a good long life. Intentions were good, I suppose, but Alice gave up Mia a month after she adopted her. Supposedly Mia was peeing on her Chihuahua’s head.
